Modern Pune Formerly known as Poona, is evolved from Punawadi. This is an prestigious educational, military and industrial center. It is located about 180 km. South East of Mumbai, the economic nerve center of India.
Pune is rich in history, being referred to in inscriptions since 700 AD. It gained its importance in the 17th Century, when the heroic Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj made it the nucleus of his empire against the Mughal rulers. Subsequently, the Peshwa rule, the Independence struggle of Lokmanya Tilak and the confinement of Mahatma Gandhi during 1942, continued the historical importance of Pune.

It was once the base of the Peshwas (prime ministers) of the Maratha Empire, which lasted from 1674 to 1818.
